_Fred Astaire speaking at a WMRN microphone during a War Bond appearance, Marion,
Ohio, 1943._

## Description

This photograph documents actor and dancer Fred Astaire speaking at a WMRN microphone
during a War Bond promotional appearance in Marion, Ohio during World War II. Astaire
is shown addressing an audience while standing at a microphone bearing the WMRN
call letters.

During the war years, nationally known entertainers frequently participated in War
Bond drives to encourage public support for the United States war effort. Radio
stations such as WMRN played an important role in promoting these campaigns by hosting
appearances, broadcasting speeches, and helping publicize fundraising events within
their communities.

The photograph reflects WMRN’s participation in wartime civic efforts and illustrates
how radio stations served as local platforms for nationally recognized figures supporting
the War Bond program during the early 1940s.
